ENTER THE SHADOW

Jump and run Game

OVERVIEW

Enter the Shadow is a low-poly jump and run game developed as university project. The game features a unique mechanic where players alternate between the real world and a shadow world, each with its own set of physics. In the shadow world, players can traverse shadows cast by objects like trees and bushes, while in the real world, these offer no support. Other in-game elements, such as glass and lanterns, behave differently depending on the world, resulting in varied gameplay dynamics. Although the project was initially envisioned as a mobile game, time constraints ultimately led to the development of a PC version.

RESPONSIBILITIES

I contributed to the project from the initial brainstorming phase, helping to shape the core mechanics and overall concept. My primary responsibility was level design, where I developed and structured each level while coordinating with the art team to ensure that all necessary assets were in place. This collaborative process aimed to create an engaging and visually coherent experience that capitalized on the unique shadow mechanic.

REFLECTION

While I liked the initial concept, I think we fell short in the execution. The shadow world's rules could be made more intuitive to enhance player understanding. Additionally, the PC controls were less than ideal, as the design was originally optimized for mobile play. In retrospect, focusing exclusively on the PC version from the outset might have allowed for better optimization and a more polished overall experience.
